The final market day

On the 26th of September it was the year 7, 8, 9 & 10's market day.
My company was rainbow cupcakes our first batch didn't work out instead they went hard.
The second batch work out really well but they weren't as big as we wanted. We only got eleven so we did a sausage sizzle but we tried our beast.
My favourite part about market day was being with my team, working together and seeing ever ones happy face.
I like giving the sausages to people and hearing them saying thank you.
If I did it again I would make a different creation

Orana park recount

Orana park recount

On Tuesday the 18th of September the year sevens went to Orana Park.
We left shortly after 8 30.
The animal that we went to see first was the kiwi. The mum kiwi carries the
baby
they also have strong bones and not hollow legs. Kiwi are our native
birds and are
no able to fly.
Did you know that the females kiwi is bigger than males kiwi?
This is because the female kiwi has to have enough room for the baby.
When the kiwi are six weeks old they will be let go.
We got to see a kiwi up close they were so awesome and cute.

After we looked at the kiwi we went and looked at another native bird the kea.
If you feed chocolate to kea they will die.
Never feed kea your food it is not good for them they could choke or it will be
hard to digest.
Make sure that you chase a kea off your car before you drive because you will
go to fast and they will fall off and die or get badly injured.
They were flying over my head they were so amazing.

Did you know that spider monkeys have an thumbprint on the tail?
They use their
tail to balance.
Spider monkeys are named that way because they hang from the trees by
holding different branches or ropes with their limbs and long tails shaped
like spiders.
Spider monkeys do not have a thumb.
Their four fingers are curved and look like a hook which is special adaptation to
the life in the forest.
They are funny and awesome.

Lion have the loudest roar of all wild cats. It can be heard from 5 miles away.

Tasmanian devil are marsupials and carry their babies in their pouches.
Only the the strongest four would survive because the mum only has 4 teats to
feed from. And the cling onto each others backs

Tiger live alone and spray to mark their territory

Zebra are born with black and then they develop their white strips.
Every zebra has unique strips.

Cheetah are the only large cat that can purr

The oldest is dominant and the young apes mast give him whatever he wants.

Giraffes tongue changed colour so it doesn’t get sunburn.

Rhino horn is made out of the same stuff as our hair and toe nails/keratin

Water buffalo love to swim but they hide from the rain

Orangutan put bags over their head to keep them safe from the sun

I hope you enjoyed reading my recount I hope you learnt something new.

Ice cubes

Today in science we were trying to make a match stick attach to ice. We used a Beaker but you can use a bowl, ice cube and salt. It worked for some people but for us it was a challenge to get it to stick at the end we did and we never gave up we first put water into the Beaker after the water was in the Beaker we dropped into the water we put the march stick on the ice and sprinkle salt were the mach was placed and waited we were so happy it worked it was a lot of fun.

You will need;

  • A becker or bowl of cold water
  • A matchstick
  • An cube of ice
  • Salt

Instructions:

  1. Place the ice cube in the bowl of cold water
  2. Place the match on top of the ice and then try to lift the ice cube
  3. Put the matchstick back on the ice and sprinkle a little salt along the line where it touches the ice cube so it can stick
  4. Wait for 30 seconds and then try to pick up the cube of ice again

What’s the science?

At first the ice cube and water are in equilibrium meaning that the rate of freezing and melting is the same.
This releases lots of energy in the form of heat, so everything gets colder, including the ice cube. Where there’s no salt (under the match) the ice cube refreezes, freezing the match in place.

Extra for experts:

Why do we sprinkle salt on icy roads? So the ice melts faster.

Elephant’s Toothpaste

today in science the experiment we made was elephant's toothpaste with Mrs Hastie

what to use

  • Safety glasses
  • A cylinder
  • Rubber gloves
  • A tote tray to protect the bench from damage
  • 120ml Hydrogen Peroxide 6%
  • Dishwash liquid
  • Dry yeast
  • Food colouring
  • Funnel
  • Tablespoon
  • Beaker
Procedure:
  1. Put on your gloves and goggles on.
  2. Put a tote tray on the bench and put your cylinder in the tote tray, with the funnel in the top.
  3. Ask the teacher to pour the hydrogen peroxide into your cylinder (via the funnel).
  4. Add 10 drops of food colouring to the cylinder (via the funnel).
  5. Add a tablespoon of dish wash liquid to the bottle (via the funnel).
  6. Swirl your cylinder around to mix everything together.
  7. In a beaker, mix a tablespoon of dry yeast with 3 tablespoons of warm water and stir for 30 seconds.
  8. Pour the yeast mixture into the cylinder (via the funnel).
  9. Stand back and watch the chemical reaction!
  10. Pour the mixture down the drain afterwards and wash out the cylinder.
Scientific Explanation (How it works):
The yeast and water mixture acts as a catalyst - something that speeds up a chemical reaction in another substance, while remaining unchanged itself. When you add this to the cylinder it makes the hydrogen peroxide break down into oxygen and water. The dishwashing liquid traps the oxygen in bubbles to create the foam. Just a small amount of hydrogen peroxide will create a lot of oxygen, so you get loads of bubbles - making your ‘toothpaste’ almost explode out of the cylinder.

We were really happy how ours worked out at first we thought we had down it wrong but it was awesome make sure to have an adult when you do this and have fun

we had photos but we could not upload them.
